Local press: UAE perfect model for peaceful coexistence

ABU DHABI, 16th November, 2018 (WAM) — In this era of rising extremism and widening conflicts characterised by a fundamental disregard for human life, the need to promote tolerance by fostering mutual understanding among cultures and peoples assumes huge significance, an editorial in a local English language daily has said. The editorial, in today’s edition of The Gulf Today, added, The UAE’s promotion of peaceful coexistence and a tolerant society is totally in line with the government’s vision when it announced the creation of ministerial posts for Happiness, Tolerance and The Future. The UAE is also a perfect model for tolerance especially because people from over 200 nationalities live here enjoying total security, peace and prosperity in an entirely harmonious environment, the editorial comment added. The paper quoted Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance, as saying that establishing the Ministry of Tolerance in the UAE was a clear announcement to the country and the entire world that tolerance and coexistence are part of the country’s foundations and must be preserved. The two-day World Tolerance Summit being held in Dubai by the International Institute for Tolerance is another admirable initiative as it is the world’s first-of-its-kind event that tackles tolerance, peace and cultural understanding among mankind. The creation of the International Institute for Tolerance through the patronage of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives helps provide solutions to the challenges of extremism and sectarianism through promotion of the culture of tolerance. In June 2016, the UAE Cabinet adopted the National Tolerance Programme, which is based on Islam, the Emirati constitution, the legacy of Sheikh Zayed, Emirati ethics, international conventions and common human values. The UAE has strongly highlighted the importance of promoting the values of moderation and pluralism among communities to prevent extremist groups from using religion to recruit members. Law No.2 for 2015, issued by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, criminalised actions related to contempt of religions and their sanctities and combating all forms of discrimination. The country also established the Sawab Centre in March 2015 to combat the promotional campaigns of Daesh, and promote moderation on social media. The UAE’s model of broadmindedness demonstrates the true image of Islam, which is one of love, tolerance and brotherhood. The UAE will always be remembered as a bold and peaceful nation that is not swayed by the intolerance bug prevalent in many other countries, concluded the Sharjah-based daily.
